COSHH Management in Manufacturing

With an annual output of £224 billion, the UK manufacturing sector is a major player in the worldwide market.

The UK is currently the eighth largest manufacturing nation in the world, contributing 23% of the UK’s GDP and employing 2.6 million people.

In such a vast and high risk sector, there are challenges to face every day when keeping 2.6 million people safe. Manufacturers are made up of many different sites and departments, meaning that health and safety teams play a crucial part in looking after the safety of staff and protecting the everyday running of the business.

The Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) manufacturing statistics demonstrate that it’s a high risk sector when it comes to work related ill health issues, alongside other sectors such as construction and agriculture. Work-related ill health issues cover all types of illnesses such as lung disease, skin disease, occupational cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and mental health. These can often be long lasting and have a detrimental impact on the health and wellbeing of workers.
